Swine Surveillance

Swine surveillance is the systematic collection and analysis of health, production, and diagnostic data from pig populations to detect infectious threats and monitor their spread. It works by combining representative sampling of animals or herds with laboratory tests that identify pathogens, antibodies, or other indicators of infection, then interpreting results across time, location, and production systems. In immunology and infection research, surveillance helps distinguish active disease from prior exposure, track immune responses, and identify emerging or changing pathogens. These findings support early warning, targeted biosecurity, vaccination planning, outbreak investigation, and evidence-based decisions that protect animal health, agricultural productivity, and, when relevant, public health.

A method to preserve, detect and sequence RNA from Avian Influenza Viruses was validated and extended using natural faecal samples from birds. This technique removes the necessity of maintaining a cool chain and handling of infectious viruses and can be applied in a 96-well high-throughput setup.

Immune Surveillance by NK Cells and Phagocytes

2026

Immune surveillance is an integral part of the innate immune system, involving the continuous monitoring of peripheral tissues to detect and respond to pathogens, infected cells, or cancerous cells. This surveillance is conducted primarily by natural killer (NK) cells and phagocytes, which employ distinct but complementary mechanisms to identify and eliminate threats. Natural Killer Cells: The Fast Responders NK cells are large granular lymphocytes found in the blood and lymphatic system. These...
