Glisson System

The Glisson system is the connective-tissue framework that accompanies portal triads through the liver, enclosing branches of the portal vein, hepatic artery, and bile duct. These structures travel together within Glisson’s sheath and repeatedly branch into smaller portal tracts, delivering blood to liver tissue while collecting bile for transport away from hepatocytes. This organized arrangement provides an anatomical map for understanding hepatic segments, interpreting medical imaging, and planning procedures such as liver resection or transplantation. It also helps clinicians relate vascular and biliary anatomy to patterns of injury, obstruction, and disease spread.
