Laparoscopic Harmonic Scalpel

The laparoscopic harmonic scalpel is a minimally invasive surgical instrument that uses ultrasonic energy to cut tissue and control bleeding through a small abdominal incision. Its blade vibrates at high frequency, causing mechanical disruption of tissue while generating heat that denatures proteins and seals small blood vessels and tissue bundles, often with less smoke and thermal spread than electrosurgical devices. Surgeons use it in laparoscopic procedures such as cholecystectomy, gynecologic surgery, and gastrointestinal operations to dissect, coagulate, and divide tissue with a single instrument. This combined action can streamline surgery, improve visualization, and support precise tissue handling in modern medicine.

Harmonic Mean

2023

The arithmetic mean is usually skewed towards the larger values in the data set. Therefore, to avoid this inherent bias towards smaller values, the harmonic mean is used. Take the example of the speed of a car, which is the measure of the rate of distance traveled. If the vehicle traverses the same distance back-and-forth, its average speed equals the total distance traveled divided by the total time taken. However, if the car moves with varying speeds, then the arithmetic mean is more skewed...

Source: Ketron Mitchell-Wynne, PhD, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Potential energy is an important concept in physics. Potential energy is the energy associated with forces that depend upon the position of an object relative to its surroundings. Gravitational potential energy, which is discussed in another video, is the energy associated that is directly proportional to the height of an object above...

This protocol presents a step-by-step guide for the Simultaneous Label-free Autofluorescence Multi-harmonic (SLAM) microscopic technique, including details on how to generate the laser light source, prepare a tissue sample, conduct imaging, and analyze the data. SLAM advances nonlinear microscopy by measuring four complementary label-free contrasts to investigate the tissue microenvironment.
