Rabbit Echocardiography

Rabbit echocardiography is a noninvasive ultrasound technique used to visualize the rabbit heart and assess cardiac structure and function, making it valuable in veterinary medicine and cardiovascular research. A high-frequency transducer sends sound waves through the thorax, and returning echoes generate two-dimensional images, M-mode measurements, and Doppler recordings of blood flow; these data can quantify chamber dimensions, wall motion, valve performance, and selected indicators of cardiac output. Researchers use the method to monitor heart disease, evaluate cardiovascular effects of drugs or interventions, and track changes over time in experimental models. Because it avoids tissue collection, it supports repeated assessment in longitudinal studies.

Fetal and perinatal death is a common feature when studying genetic alterations affecting cardiac development. High-frequency ultrasound imaging has improved 2-D resolution and can provide excellent information on early cardiac development and is an ideal method to detect the impact on cardiac structure and function prior to death.

Transthoracic echocardiography offers a noninvasive method for the evaluation of cardiac function in mice. A combination of ultrasound and Doppler imaging modalities can be used to obtain dimensional measurements of the heart and intracardiac blood flow, which together provide an assessment of cardiac systolic and diastolic performance.

This video demonstrates use of a rail-mounted high-frequency ultrasound probe to perform echocardiography on an anesthetized mouse. The methods describe both conventional two-dimensional and M-mode measurements of cardiac function in addition to newer, more powerful tools such as color Doppler, strain analysis, as well as general and targeted contrast imaging.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Blood sampling is commonly performed in laboratory rabbits for research and clinical applications. The collection site is selected based on the required sample volume, sampling frequency, and study objectives. As a general...
