Silk Suture Thread

Silk suture thread is a sterile, natural, nonabsorbable surgical material used to approximate tissue and secure wounds during healing. It is made primarily from fibroin protein produced by silkworms, often processed into braided fibers that provide flexibility, reliable knot security, and high initial tensile strength. Surgeons use silk sutures in soft-tissue closure, ligation, and procedures requiring precise handling, although the material can provoke more tissue reaction than many synthetic alternatives and gradually loses strength in the body. Understanding its structure and performance helps clinicians select suitable sutures for different surgical applications and healing conditions.

Electrospinning of Silk Biomaterials

2023

Silk fibers have been processed and used to create fabrics and threads for centuries. However, the solubilizing of silk fibers, thereby turning it into a versatile pre-polymer solution is a much newer technology. Solubilized silk can be processed in many different ways to create a biocompatible material with controllable mechanical properties. This video introduces the processing of silk from silk worm cocoons, and shows how the silk solution can be used to create a fiber mat via...

Blending is an efficient approach to generate biomaterials with a broad range of properties and combined features. By predicting the molecular interactions between different natural silk proteins, new silk-silk protein alloy platforms with tunable mechanical resiliency, electrical response, optical transparency, chemical processability, biodegradability, or thermal stability can be designed.

Despite the outstanding mechanical and biochemical properties of spider silks, this material cannot be harvested in large quantities by conventional means. Here we describe an efficient strategy to spin artificial spider silk fibers, which is an important process for investigators studying spider silk production and their use as next-generation biomaterials.

Inducing Ischemic Stroke via Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion Using a Thread Bolt

2025

This video demonstrates the process of inducing ischemic stroke in a rat model by occluding the middle cerebral artery (MCA) using a thread bolt. The procedure involves ligating the carotid arteries, inserting a thread bolt into the external carotid artery, and blocking blood flow from the MCA to the brain, leading to neuronal death and mimicking an ischemic stroke.
