Stool Sample Analysis

Stool sample analysis is the laboratory examination of fecal material to assess digestive health and identify abnormalities that may indicate disease. Depending on the clinical question, testing may include visual inspection, chemical assays, microscopic examination, and microbiological methods that detect blood, parasites, pathogens, inflammation, or altered digestive function. In medicine, these analyses support the diagnosis of gastrointestinal infections, malabsorption, inflammatory bowel disease, and colorectal conditions, while helping clinicians evaluate symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and unexplained bleeding. Results can guide treatment decisions, monitor disease activity, and determine whether additional diagnostic testing is needed.

A One-Step RT-PCR assay for detection and genogroup identification of Norovirus isolates from children’s stools, that utilizes primers and TaqMan probes specific to the open reading frame 1 (ORF1)-ORF2 junction region, the most conserved region of the Norovirus genome is described. A non-commercial, cost-effective RNA extraction method is detailed.

Stool Microbial DNA Isolation: Studying the Effect of Environmental Enrichment on Microbiome Diversity in Murine Tumor Model

2023

This video describes DNA isolation protocol from stool samples of colon tumor-bearing mice. The extracted DNA is amplified using PCR, and the product is further cleaned using a magnetic beads-based approach. This method can be used to determine the effect of environmental enrichment on colon microbiota and animal mortality.

Carbon and Nitrogen Analysis of Environmental Samples

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Elemental Analysis is a method used to determine elemental composition of a material. In environmental samples such as soils, scientists are particularly interested in the amounts of two ecologically important elements, nitrogen and carbon. Elemental analysis by the flash combustion technique works by oxidizing the sample with a catalyst through combustion in a high-temperature chamber. The products of combustion are...
