Microglia Derived Proteins

Microglia-derived proteins are molecules produced and released by microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system, and they help regulate neural tissue. In response to infection, injury, or changes in the local environment, microglia alter protein synthesis and secretion, including cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, and other signaling molecules that influence inflammation, neuronal survival, and communication with astrocytes and neurons. Studying these proteins helps researchers characterize microglial states and their roles in neurodevelopment, synaptic remodeling, neurodegeneration, and brain repair. Their expression profiles may also provide biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets for neurological disease.

SEC-based Isolation of Microglia-derived Extracellular Vesicles: A Technique to Isolate Extracellular Vesicles from Microglia Conditioned Culture Media

2023

This video describes a method based on size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) to isolate extracellular vesicles or EVs derived from the brain immune cells―the microglia. The EVs act as molecular cargo to deliver mediators, which regulate an immune response. Therefore, the isolated EVs can be used as an in vitro model to study the microglia-neuron crosstalk during a neuronal immune response.

Microglia are resident macrophages that provide the first line of defense and immune surveillance of the central nervous system. MicroRNAs are regulatory molecules that play an important role in many physiological processes including activation and differentiation of macrophages. In this article, we describe the method for measurement of microRNAs in microglia.
