Superior Colliculus

The superior colliculus is a paired midbrain structure that integrates sensory information and helps orient the eyes, head, and body toward significant stimuli, making it central to rapid attention and sensorimotor behavior. Its superficial layers receive strong visual input, while deeper layers combine visual, auditory, and somatosensory signals to form spatial representations and initiate motor commands through connections with brainstem and spinal circuits. In neuroscience, studying the superior colliculus clarifies how the brain selects targets, coordinates saccades and orienting movements, and links perception with action. It also provides a model for investigating attention, multisensory integration, motor control, and neurological disorders affecting these functions.
