Tip Recording Technique

The tip recording technique is an extracellular electrophysiological method that measures sensory neuron activity from the end of a small sensory structure, such as an insect taste sensillum. A recording electrode contacts the sensillum tip while the stimulus is applied, allowing receptor activation to generate voltage changes and action potentials that can be detected and quantified. In neuroscience, this approach links chemical stimuli with neural responses, helping researchers characterize gustatory receptor function, compare taste coding across sensory neurons, and investigate how peripheral chemosensory signals contribute to behavior.

Olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) convert odor signals first into a receptor current that in turn triggers action potentials that are conveyed to second order neurons in the olfactory bulb. Here we describe the suction pipette technique to record simultaneously the odorant-induced receptor current and action potentials from mouse ORNs.

Base Recording: A Technique for Analyzing Responses of Taste Neurons in Drosophila

A rarely used method of electrophysiological recording, base recording, allows analysis of features of taste coding that cannot be examined by conventional recording methods. Base recording also allows the analysis of taste responses to hydrophobic stimuli that cannot be studied using traditional electrophysiological methods.
