Surface Roughness

Surface roughness is the small-scale variation in height and texture across a material’s surface, describing how far it departs from an ideal smooth plane. It arises from processes such as machining, deposition, wear, or fracture and is characterized by measurements of surface profiles, commonly summarized with parameters such as average roughness (Ra) or root-mean-square roughness (Rq). These irregularities alter real contact area, friction, adhesion, fluid flow, and the scattering or absorption of light and other waves. In physics, surface roughness analysis helps explain tribological behavior, optimize manufacturing and coatings, assess optical components, and evaluate how interfaces influence device performance.

Directing Proteins to the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum

2023

The organelle-specific signaling sequences direct proteins synthesized in the cytosol to their final destination like ER, mitochondria, peroxisomes, etc. Some of the proteins directed to ER are then trafficked via vesicles to other organelles within the cell or the extracellular environment through the Golgi complex. For example, the rough ER synthesizes soluble proteins for transportation to the lysosomes or secretion out of the cell. It can also synthesize transmembrane proteins that can...

The pial surface is a unique progenitor zone in the CNS that is receiving increasing attention. Herein, we detail a method for rapid genetic manipulation of this progenitor zone using a modified electroporation method. This procedure can be used for cellular and molecular investigations of cell lineages and signaling pathways involved in cell differentiation and to elucidate the fate and properties of daughter cells.
