Large Request Refusal

Large request refusal is a social influence phenomenon in which a person declines an initial, substantial request before receiving a smaller request from the same source. In psychology, this sequence forms the basis of the door-in-the-face technique: after the large request is rejected, the requester makes a more modest appeal, and the recipient may feel pressure to reciprocate the apparent concession. Perceptual contrast can also make the second request seem more reasonable by comparison. Studying this process helps explain compliance, interpersonal negotiation, persuasion, and how request order influences decisions in everyday and research settings.
