Analyzing Gene Expression and Function

Reporter Genes in Cells and Plasmids

Description

Reporter genes are protein-coding genes used to track gene activity in cells. They are often tagged to a gene of interest so scientists can see whether that gene is present or active. When the tagged genes are expressed together, reporter genes can produce visible signals such as fluorescence or luminescence.

Transcript

Researchers use reporter genes to determine when and where a gene of interest is expressed. A reporter gene codes for a protein that can be tracked, such as a protein with a known enzymatic activity or one that is fluorescent.

Gene expression is controlled by cis-regulatory sequences located upstream or downstream of a gene’s cod...
