Classification of Epithelial Tissues: Simple Epithelium

Simple epithelium is a monolayer of cells covering the basement membrane. Such a thin barrier facilitates the rapid absorption and secretion of selective substances. Simple epithelia can be squamous, cuboidal, or columnar.
The simple squamous epithelium consists of flattened cells forming a smooth epithelial barrier that minimizes friction while allowing the exchange of gases and nutrients. Their two forms are endothelium and mesothelium.
Endothelium lines blood and lymph vessels facilitating the easy flow of fluids.
Mesothelium forms a slippery film to line internal body cavities or to cover the lungs, heart, and abdominal organs externally. It protects internal organs from rubbing against each other during breathing, pumping blood, or churning food during digestion.
The simple cuboidal epithelium contains cells of the same height and width. They line the kidney tubules, facilitating waste secretion and nutrient reabsorption.
The simple columnar epithelium is a layer of tightly packed tall cells. In the intestines, the columnar lining has finger-like membrane protrusions or microvilli to enhance nutrient absorption, whereas the stomach lining forms tubular glands that secrete digestive juices.

Simple epithelium consists of a single layer of cells that lines body cavities and blood vessels. The shape of the cells in the epithelium reflects the function of the tissue. Cells in simple squamous epithelium appear as thin scales with flat, elliptical nuclei that mirror the form of the cell.
Because of the thinness of the cells, simple squamous epithelium is present where the rapid passage of chemical compounds is observed. For example, the endothelium that lines the capillaries and vessels of the blood and lymphatic systems is a simple epithelial tissue which allows the exchange of nutrients. Similarly, the alveoli of the lungs, and segments of kidney tubules, are also composed of simple squamous epithelial tissue.
Additionally, simple epithelia can also provide a smooth and protective surface. The mesothelium is a simple squamous epithelium that forms the surface layer of the serous membrane that lines body cavities and internal organs. Mesothelial cells secrete a fluid that lubricates the mesothelium.
In simple cuboidal epithelium, the nucleus of the box-like cells appears round and is generally located near the center of the cell. These epithelia are active in the secretion and absorption of molecules. Simple cuboidal epithelia are observed in the lining of the kidney tubules and the ducts of glands.
Simple columnar epithelium contains tall column-like cells with elongated nuclei located near the cells&#39; basal end. Like cuboidal epithelia, the primary function of this epithelium is the absorption and secretion of molecules. Simple columnar epithelium forms the lining of the digestive tract and parts of the female reproductive tract. Ciliated columnar epithelium is composed of simple columnar epithelial cells with cilia on their apical surfaces. These epithelial cells are found in the lining of the fallopian tubes and parts of the respiratory system. The beating of the cilia in the fallopian tube helps the ovum move toward the uterus, and those in the respiratory tract help remove particulate matter.
Some specialized simple epithelia perform essential bodily functions. One such type is the pseudostratified epithelium, a specialization of simple columnar epithelia that contains cells of varying height and nuclei levels, giving an illusion of having multiple layers. The pseudostratified columnar epithelium is found in the respiratory tract, where these cells have cilia to propel dust and other foreign bodies toward the outside of the body.
Another type of epithelium is the myoepithelia or basket cells, which are contractile cells composed of actin and myosin filaments. They form a layer around secretory cells of various glands, such as salivary glands, mammary glands, and sweat glands. Upon receiving nerve signals, myoepithelia undergo contractions and help release glandular products from the secretory cells.

Simple epithelium is a single layer of cells that lines body cavities and blood vessels. The shape of each cell matches the job of the tissue. In the body, this means flat, box-like, and tall cells each help in different ways.

Simple squamous epithelium is made of thin, scale-like cells with flat, elliptical nuclei. Because these cells are so thin, they are found where chemicals must pass quickly. This tissue lines capillaries and blood and lymph vessels as endothelium, where nutrients are exchanged. It also forms the alveoli of the lungs and parts of kidney tubules. Simple squamous epithelium can also create a smooth, protective surface. When it forms the surface layer of serous membranes, it is called mesothelium. Mesothelial cells also secrete fluid that lubricates the membrane.

Simple cuboidal epithelium has box-like cells with round nuclei near the center of the cell. This tissue is active in secretion and absorption. It is found in kidney tubules and in the ducts of glands. Simple columnar epithelium has tall, column-shaped cells with elongated nuclei near the basal end. Like cuboidal epithelium, it helps with absorption and secretion. It lines the digestive tract and parts of the female reproductive tract.

Ciliated columnar epithelium is simple columnar epithelium with cilia on the top surface. These cilia beat to move an egg through the fallopian tubes toward the uterus. In the respiratory system, they help remove particulate matter. Pseudostratified epithelium is a special form of simple columnar epithelium. Its cells have different heights and nuclei at different levels, so it looks layered even though it is not. It is found in the respiratory tract, where cilia help push dust and other foreign bodies outward.

Myoepithelia, also called basket cells, are another specialized simple epithelium. These contractile cells contain actin and myosin filaments. They form a layer around secretory cells in glands such as salivary glands, mammary glands, and sweat glands. When they receive nerve signals, they contract and help release gland products.
