Dense Connective Tissue

Dense connective tissue is a type of connective tissue that contains a tight network of collagen fibers in a viscous matrix, with fewer cells and less ground substance than loose connective tissue.
These are of three types, dense regular, dense irregular, and elastic tissues.
The dense regular tissue comprises collagen fiber bundles arranged in parallel with fibroblast cells in alternating layers. These tissues are present in tendons and ligaments, where they are resistant to pulling forces and allow limited stretching.
Dense irregular tissues comprise thicker bundles of collagen fibers and fibroblast cells that are randomly arranged, giving an irregular appearance. These tissues form a protective fibrous covering around organs and joint capsules, where the irregularly arranged tissue components allow them to withstand compression.
Elastic tissue comprises elastin fibers, which can stretch and recoil to their original size. These can be found in large arteries like the aorta, forming an elastic sheet around the blood vessels.

Dense connective tissue contains more collagen fibers than loose connective tissue. As a consequence, it displays greater resistance to stretching. There are two major categories of dense connective tissue&#8212; regular and irregular.
Dense Regular Connective Tissue
In dense regular connective tissue, fibers are arranged parallel to each other, enhancing its tensile strength and resistance to stretching in the direction of the fiber orientations. Ligaments and tendons are made of dense regular connective tissue with collagen fibers arranged in parallel. Ligaments also contain elastin fibers in addition to collagen fibers, which allow them to return to their original length after stretching.
Dense Irregular Connective Tissue
In dense irregular connective tissue, the direction of fibers is random. This arrangement gives the tissue greater strength in all directions and less strength in one particular direction. In some tissues, fibers crisscross and form a mesh. In other tissues, stretching in several directions is achieved by alternating layers where fibers run in the same orientation in each layer, and it is the layers themselves that are stacked at an angle. The dermis of the skin is an example of dense irregular connective tissue rich in collagen fibers. Dense irregular elastic tissues contain large numbers of elastin fibers. It is the presence of such tissues in arterial walls that gives them the strength and ability to regain their original shape after stretching.

Dense connective tissue has more collagen fibers than loose connective tissue. That extra collagen makes it more resistant to stretching. It is usually grouped into two main types: dense regular connective tissue and dense irregular connective tissue.

Dense regular connective tissue has fibers arranged in parallel. This pattern gives the tissue high tensile strength, or resistance to pulling, in the direction of the fibers. Ligaments and tendons are made of dense regular connective tissue, and their collagen fibers are lined up in the same direction. Ligaments also contain elastin fibers along with collagen fibers, which helps them return to their original length after stretching.

Dense irregular connective tissue has fibers arranged in random directions. That layout gives the tissue strength in many directions, but less strength in one specific direction. In some tissues, the fibers crisscross to form a mesh. In others, layers are stacked at an angle so the tissue can stretch in several directions.

The dermis of the skin is one example of dense irregular connective tissue rich in collagen fibers. Dense irregular elastic tissues contain many elastin fibers. In arterial walls, these tissues help give blood vessels strength and allow them to regain their original shape after stretching.
