The extracellular matrix (ECM) gives connective tissue its support, shape, and signals. Unlike epithelial tissue, where cells are tightly packed with little or no space between them, connective tissue cells are spread out in a matrix. That matrix fills the space around the cells and helps the tissue work as a unit.
