Humans have five special senses—vision, smell, taste, hearing, and equilibrium. All these senses have anatomically distinct receptors to detect external stimuli.
These receptors are localized in the head, either as parts of complex sensory organs, such as in the eyes and ears or as epithelial structures in the nose and on the tongue.
Vision is the sense of sight, an essential and dominant human sense. The eyes detect visible light and help in image formation, recognize objects and patterns, and perceive distance.
Olfaction is the sense of smell. The olfactory receptors in the nose can detect and differentiate various odors.
Gustation is the sense of taste. The taste buds on the tongue can differentiate five primary tastes—sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami.
The auditory system gives a sense of hearing. Its components detect audible sound waves and help differentiate various pitches, tones and loudness.
In addition, the ears' vestibular system aids in equilibrium and spatial orientation. It provides a sense of linear and rotational movement and the position of the head with respect to gravity.
