Traumatic brain injury, or TBI, refers to a disruption of normal brain function caused by external mechanical force, such as a direct impact or a penetrating head injury.
Traumatic brain injury is a heterogeneous condition classified by severity, injury mechanism, or pathophysiology.
Clinically, severity is often assessed using the Glasgow Coma Scale, or GCS, a bedside scale that reviews eye opening, verbal response, and motor response.
Severity classification also considers loss of consciousness, or LOC, and post-traumatic amnesia, or PTA.
Mild TBI, or concussion, commonly develops after sports injuries and is defined by a GCS score of 13 to 15, LOC up to 30 minutes, and PTA less than 24 hours.
Moderate TBI may result from motor vehicle crashes and is defined by a GCS score of 9 to 12, LOC lasting 30 minutes to 24 hours, and PTA up to 7 days.
Severe TBI can happen after major falls and is defined by a GCS score of 3 to 8, LOC lasting more than 24 hours, and PTA lasting more than 7 days.
