Loss Of Consciousness

Loss of consciousness is a temporary state in which the brain cannot maintain awareness of the external environment or respond normally to stimuli. It occurs when widespread neural activity supporting arousal and conscious processing is disrupted, often because reduced blood flow, altered electrical activity, injury, toxins, or metabolic imbalance interferes with brain function. In biology and medicine, distinguishing brief fainting from seizures, coma, or other causes requires attention to onset, duration, muscle activity, breathing, and recovery. Studying loss of consciousness helps researchers understand brain networks involved in awareness and supports accurate diagnosis, emergency care, neurological assessment, and development of treatments for disorders of consciousness.

An EEG experimental protocol is designed to clarify the interplay between conscious and non-conscious representations of emotional faces in patients with Asperger's syndrome. The technique suggests that patients with Asperger's syndrome have deficits in non-conscious representation of emotional faces, but have comparable performance in conscious representation with healthy controls.

Line Loss

The different configurations of source-load connections include wye (star) and delta connections. The relationship between line and phase voltages and currents varies depending on the configuration. When the source is supplying power, it is transmitted through the wires to the load, and during this transmission, some power is absorbed by the wires, leading to line loss. Line loss impacts power delivery efficiency in a balanced three-phase circuit. The symmetry in such a circuit simplifies the...

Piping Networks and Pressure Losses

Source: Alexander S Rattner, Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA This experiment introduces the measurement and modeling of pressure losses in piping networks and internal flow systems. In such systems, frictional flow resistance from channel walls, fittings, and obstructions causes mechanical energy in the form of fluid pressure to be converted to heat. Engineering analyses are needed to size flow hardware to ensure...

Understanding Consciousness

2024

Consciousness can be defined as the state of being aware of and able to think about one's existence, sensations, and surroundings. It encompasses two major components: awareness and arousal. Awareness pertains to the recognition of environmental stimuli and internal states. At the same time, arousal refers to the physiological readiness to engage with these stimuli, which varies significantly between states like sleep and wakefulness. Sleep, a crucial state, is characterized by reduced physical...
