Marcelo Mendes Rabelo

Regulatory Specialist - International Registrations, Nutrien Ag Solutions

Dr. Rabelo's main interest is to promote and spread sustainability in agriculture. He has a degree in agronomy (Unimontes-Brazil), a Master and a PhD in Entomology (UFV-Brazil). Currently, he is a temporary faculty at the University of Florida (WFREC/UF-USA). Dr. Rabelo has studied the toxicological interactions of transgenic crops expressing insecticidal proteins and synthetic insecticides with insect pest species of worldwide economic importance. He obtained relevant results using target and non-target species, including lethal, sublethal, hormeses, and transgenerational effects on the insect's life history. His research helps understand the shift in ecological dominance of less susceptible species over others more sensitive to the control strategies. His efforts have also improved resistance management recommendations for target and non-target species of insecticides and Bt crops. Besides several publications in reputable scientific journals, he has won awards for his outstanding work/presentations in the Entomological Society of America and scientific journal. He now works as regulatory specialist at Nutrien Ag solutions.

Collection Overview

Modern agriculture has faced increasing challenges concerning crop protection against insect pests. Invasive species, resistance to control methods, secondary pests’ resurgence, and outbreaks are a few challenges of modern agriculture. Entomology laboratories worldwide have dedicated efforts to novel methods, techniques, and protocols of rearing and testing insect pests to understand their behavior, biology, ecology, and molecular aspects related to the insect's potential to threaten agriculture. This collection will gather these methods used to study the insect pests in crop protection and promote the diffusion and standardization of the knowledge across scientists.
