Collection Overview

A severe threat to the global health is antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Antimicrobial resistance will lead to an estimated death of around 10 million people annually due to suffering from AMR pathogens if no firm action will be taken immediately. AMR pathogens are usually equipped with complicated intrinsic, adaptive, and acquired mechanisms to survive and thrive from routine antimicrobial chemotherapies and cause life-long infections. New mechanisms are still emerging and spreading worldwide, which exacerbates the situation of unavailable drugs for future use. Understanding AMR mechanisms is urgent to reveal novel antimicrobial targets which will be important for the development of new antimicrobial drugs and precise therapeutic strategies. Moreover, discovery of broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents and establishment of alternative antimicrobial methods such as CRISPR-Cas-based bacterial killing and plasmid eradication are expected to relieve the AMR threat.

This collection aims to provide innovative methods to decipher new AMR mechanisms including high-throughput screening techniques and (meta)genomics-based predictions to identify AMR genes and regulatory pathways, efficient genome-editing tools to dissect gene functions in the genetic background of clinical AMR pathogens. This collection also provides insights into the discovery and development of novel antimicrobial agents to combat AMR, such as broad-spectrum antimicrobial peptides, CRISPR-Cas antimicrobials, phages etc. These peer-reviewed methods will greatly facilitate the fundamental research and clinical practice in dealing with the global threat of antimicrobial resistance.
