Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Neurologico “Carlo Besta”

Dr. Andrea Legati is a researcher at The Foundation of the Carlo Besta Neurological Institute IRCCS (Medical Genetics and Neurogenetics Unit). His research activity is focused on elucidating the molecular basis of mitochondrial dysfunctions, using integrated multi-omics techniques and bioinformatic analysis, with the goal of identifying disease causing mutations and biological pathways alterations associated with the pathogenesis of mitochondrial diseases and other neurodegenerative disorders. Dr. Legati graduated in Biotechnology at the University of Padova (Italy) and obtained a PhD in Molecular Genetics applied to Medical Sciences at the University of Brescia (Italy). After the PhD, he moved as a post-doctoral researcher to the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior (University of California, Los Angeles - UCLA, US), where he focused his research activity on the genetics of neurodegenerative disorders.

Collection Overview

Mitochondria form a dynamic, interconnected network within the cell. The term "mitochondrial dynamics" encompasses the processes of fission, fusion, mitophagy, and trafficking. This dynamic rearrangement of the mitochondrial complex reticulum responds to factors such as the nutritional environment, biological signals, mechanical forces, and cellular stress.

These mechanisms are essential for optimal cellular signal transduction and metabolism. Mitochondrial dysfunctions can be caused by an imbalance in mitochondrial dynamics, leading to abnormal cellular outcomes and a spectrum of pathological conditions, including neurodegenerative, metabolic, and cardiovascular disorders, cancers, and, more in general, human aging.

Comprehending the molecular processes governing mitochondrial dynamics is essential. It is crucial to use appropriate strategies and techniques to analyze how mitochondrial shape affects functions and processes. This contributes to our understanding of the molecular basis of diseases associated with defects in mitochondrial morphology.

This Methods Collection is dedicated to elucidating pertinent laboratory approaches that advance scientific research and teaching. It focuses on procedures, methods, techniques, and analyses employed to investigate mitochondrial dynamics and aims to enhance knowledge in this field
