Custom Synchronization Circuit

A custom synchronization circuit is an engineered electronic system that coordinates the timing of signals, devices, or experimental events, enabling precise measurement of behavior. It typically uses a shared clock, trigger pulses, or logic-based timing rules to align inputs and outputs across sensors, actuators, cameras, and data-acquisition equipment, while accounting for delays and sampling rates. In behavioral research, this coordination helps link an animal’s actions with environmental stimuli, neural recordings, physiological measurements, or video frames. Reliable synchronization improves temporal accuracy, supports reproducible experiments, and allows researchers to analyze relationships between behavior and other biological signals.

AC Synchronous Machine Synchronization

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Three-phase wound-rotor synchronous generators are the main source of electrical power worldwide. They require a prime mover and an exciter in order to generate power. The prime mover can be a turbine spun by fluid (gas or liquid), thus the sources of the fluid can be water running off a dam through a long nozzle, steam from water evaporated using burned coal, etc. Most power plants including coal,...

Three-Phase Short Circuit—Unloaded Synchronous Machine

2024

Conducting a three-phase short circuit test on an unloaded synchronous machine helps understand its impact on the system. The AC fault current's oscillogram, with the DC offset removed, reveals that the waveform amplitude decreases from an initially high value to a steady-state level for one phase of the machine. This behavior occurs due to the magnetic flux produced by the short-circuit armature currents. Initially, these currents follow high-reluctance paths but eventually shift to...

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Three-phase wound-rotor synchronous motors are less popular than permanent magnet rotor synchronous motors due to the brushes required for the rotor field. Synchronous generators are much more common and available in most existing power plants, as they have excellent frequency and voltage regulation. Synchronous motors have the advantage of almost 0% speed regulation due to the fact that the rotor...

Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Capacitors (C), inductors (L), and resistors (R) are each an important circuit element with distinct behaviors. A resistor dissipates energy and obeys Ohm's law, with its voltage proportional to its current. A capacitor stores electrical energy, with its current proportional to the rate of change of its voltage, while an inductor stores magnetic energy, with its voltage...
