Attack Latency

Attack latency is the time between the onset of a relevant stimulus and the initiation of an attack, providing a measurable indicator of behavioral responsiveness and aggression. Researchers assess it by presenting a defined social, territorial, or prey-related cue and recording the interval until characteristic attack behavior begins; sensory detection, threat evaluation, motivational state, and motor activation can all influence this delay. In behavioral studies, comparing attack latency across individuals or experimental conditions helps reveal how environment, prior experience, physiological state, or neural mechanisms shape decision-making and aggression. The measure is especially useful for quantifying behavioral change without relying only on attack frequency or intensity.

Acid Attack on Concrete

2024

When acids come into contact with concrete, they initiate a chemical reaction that dissolves the hydrated cement paste. This process leads to softening and structural weakening of the concrete. This issue is commonly observed in environments such as chimneys, sewers, and industrial settings. The severity of the damage increases as the pH of the water interacting with the concrete drops below 6.5. In particular, a pH under 4.5 can cause significant concrete damage. The rate at which hydrogen...

Selecting Competitors to Attack or Avoid

2024

In competitive marketing, companies strategically decide which competitors to challenge or avoid based on market share, product offerings, and operational efficiency. Attacking a competitor involves identifying exploitable weaknesses, such as poor customer service, outdated products, or inefficient processes. Smaller companies often successfully challenge larger firms by leveraging their agility, offering more responsive customer support or faster innovation cycles. For example, ride-sharing...

Sulfate Attack on Concrete

2024

Sulfate attack on concrete is a deterioration process characterized by a whitish discoloration beginning at the edges and corners, accompanied by cracking and spalling. This phenomenon occurs when sulfates react with the components of hardened concrete, forming compounds like calcium sulfate and calcium sulfoaluminate which occupy more space than the substances they replace, causing the concrete to expand and disrupt. Sulfates from sources like soil, groundwater, or industrial effluents...

Psychosexual Stages of Personality: Latency

2025

Following the phallic stage in Freud's theory of psychosexual development, children enter a phase called the latency period, which lasts from approximately six to twelve years of age. Unlike earlier stages, where sexual impulses played a central role, Freud believed these impulses are repressed during the latency period, becoming part of the unconscious. This stage is often described as a time of psychological calm after the turbulence of the phallic stage. The latency period is not considered...

2012

The protocol describes an efficient and reproducible model system to study herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) latency and reactivation. The assay employs homogenous sympathetic neuron cultures and allows for the molecular dissection of virus-neuron interactions using a variety of tools including RNA interference and expression of recombinant proteins.
