Oscillatory Brain Activity

Oscillatory brain activity refers to rhythmic fluctuations in the electrical activity of neural populations, providing a dynamic framework for understanding how the brain coordinates behavior. These rhythms arise from synchronized changes in neuronal membrane potentials and synaptic inputs, producing patterns that vary in frequency, amplitude, and phase and can be measured with methods such as electroencephalography or local field recordings. In behavioral research, changes in oscillatory activity help link brain dynamics to attention, perception, learning, memory, and movement. Examining synchronization and timing across brain regions can reveal how neural circuits organize information and adapt their activity during cognition and action.

Psychophysical methods such as the QUEST estimation procedure can efficiently yield robust estimates of the stimulation intensity at which nonpainful sensations transition into painful sensations. By stimulating repeatedly at the threshold intensity, the variability in rating responses can directly be attributed to perceptual classifications in subsequent analyses.

2014

Cerebral perfusion is maintained across a range of pressures via cerebral autoregulation. However, characterizing autoregulation requires prominent pressure fluctuations at regulated frequencies. The described protocol will show how oscillatory lower body negative pressure can generate pressure fluctuations to provide data for projection pursuit regression for quantification of the autoregulatory curve.

The goal of the protocol is to create liquid crystalline polymer films that can mechanically oscillate under continuous light irradiation. We describe in great detail the conception of free-standing films, from the liquid crystal alignment method to the photo-actuation. The experimental protocol applied to prepare this material is broadly applicable.

In Vivo Electrophysiological Recordings of Brain Activities from Multiple Sites in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates the detailed procedure for preparing an anesthetized rat for electrophysiological recordings of brain activity from multiple sites. The scalp is dissected to access the skull, and holes are drilled at precise locations to install and secure electrodes. Tungsten microwire electrodes are then inserted into the targeted location to record the data.

Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy for Recording Brain Activity During Social Interactions

Source: Reindl, V., et al. Conducting Hyperscanning Experiments with Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy. J. Vis. Exp. (2019) This video demonstrates the use of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure brain activity during social interactions. Participants engage in a coordinated task that increases activity in the prefrontal cortex, a region critical for social behavior, while the system detects changes in light absorption due to blood oxygenation. By analyzing the synchrony...
