Post-traumatic Epilepsy

Post-traumatic epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which recurrent, unprovoked seizures develop after a traumatic brain injury, making it an important model for studying how brain injury alters behavior and neural function. After the initial damage, neuronal loss, gliosis, inflammation, and remodeling of excitatory and inhibitory circuits can create hyperexcitable networks, a process known as epileptogenesis that may emerge after a latent period. Researchers use clinical observations and experimental models to examine seizure development alongside changes in learning, memory, anxiety, social interaction, and emotional regulation, supporting efforts to identify biomarkers, test preventive treatments, and clarify how post-injury circuit changes shape long-term behavior.

This systematic protocol describes a new animal model of post-traumatic epilepsy after repetitive mild traumatic brain injury. The first part details steps for traumatic brain injury induction using a modified weight drop model. The second part provides instructions on the surgical approach for single- and multi-channel electroencephalographic data acquisition systems.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that arises following exposure to traumatic events such as natural disasters, forced displacement, or severe accidents. It significantly impairs individuals' ability to cope with daily activities and disrupts their emotional and psychological equilibrium. Symptoms and Behavioral Manifestations A spectrum of distressing symptoms characterizes PTSD. Recurrent flashbacks, where individuals involuntarily relive traumatic events, are a...

(2017)This video demonstrates the use of deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) to alleviate symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. It begins by identifying reduced activity in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) as a key factor contributing to the overactivation of the amygdala and heightened fear responses. By applying targeted...

This protocol describes a procedure to track the evolution of mesial network measures in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients. It is based on the combination of intracranial recordings with a novel numerical technique for data analysis. Specifically, we present a protocol for network analyses of foramen ovale recordings.
