Retinal Vascular Plexus

The retinal vascular plexus is a branching network of blood vessels arranged in layered capillary beds within the retina, where it supports the neural tissue responsible for vision. Its vessels deliver oxygen and nutrients, remove metabolic waste, and adjust local blood flow in response to nearby neuronal activity through neurovascular coupling. In behavioral research, measurements of retinal vessel structure and blood flow can provide noninvasive indicators of visual function, neural activity, and physiological responses during tasks or sensory stimulation. Studying this plexus also helps link changes in behavior and perception with retinal health, vascular regulation, and disorders that affect the eye or nervous system.

Exposing Brachial Plexus: A Surgical Technique to Visualize Brachial Plexus in Neonatal Piglet

2025

This video describes an in vivo surgical procedure to expose the brachial plexus, a neural network that supplies cutaneous and muscular interventions to the upper limb. This surgery helps locate the plexus and eventually assess the extent of nerve injury involving the upper limb.

The retina shares prominent similarities with the brain and thus represents a unique window to study vasculature and neuronal structure in the brain non-invasively. This protocol describes a method to study dementia using retinal imaging techniques. This method can potentially aid in diagnosis and risk assessment of dementia.

3D Visualization of Retinal Vascular Pericytes in Mice by Immunostaining

2024

The pericytes in retinal vasculature were examined by immunofluorescent staining with platelet-derived growth factor receptor β after retro-orbital injection of fluorescent tomato lectin. The labeled retina was further treated with the tissue-clearing method and whole mounted for visualizing the three-dimensional views of pericytes surrounding retinal vasculature under a confocal microscope.
