Role-play Assessment

Role-play assessment is a structured method for evaluating how people apply knowledge, skills, and behavioral strategies in simulated real-world situations. In a typical assessment, participants receive assigned roles and a standardized scenario, respond through spoken or observed actions, and are evaluated against predefined criteria such as communication, decision-making, empathy, or conflict management. Observers may use a scoring rubric and provide feedback to identify strengths and areas for improvement. In behavior research and education, role-play assessment helps examine responses in controlled yet interactive settings, support skills training, and measure changes in performance across repeated practice or different conditions.

Here, we present a protocol to demonstrate a behavioral assay that quantifies how alternative visual features, such as motion cues, influence directional decisions in fish. Representative data are presented on the speed and accuracy where Golden Shiner (Notemigonus crysoleucas) follow virtual fish movements.

Social Foundations of Self I: Play and Game

2025

The development of self in children is deeply rooted in social interactions, mainly through stages of play and structured games. These stages, outlined by sociologist George Herbert Mead, illustrate how children progressively learn to understand and adopt social roles, forming a cohesive sense of self. The Play Stage: Imitation and Simple Role-TakingIn the early years of childhood, the play stage is characterized by imitative behavior, where children engage in role-playing based on familiar...

Peering into the Dynamics of Social Interactions: Measuring Play Fighting in Rats

Play fighting in the rat involves attack and defense of the nape of the neck, which if contacted, is gently nuzzled with the snout. Because the movements of one animal are countered by the actions of its partner, play fighting is a complex, dynamic interaction. This dynamic complexity raises methodological problems about what to score for experimental studies. We present a scoring schema that is sensitive to the correlated nature of the actions performed. Two experiments illustrate how these...

(2018)This video demonstrates how escalating cefazidime exposure is used to compare the survival of three E. coli strains with different copies of the ampicillin resistance gene. It shows that only the strain with a multicopy plasmid survives at higher drug levels, highlighting how increased gene copy number accelerates resistance evolution.
