Social Transmission Food Preferences

Social transmission of food preferences is the spread of choices about what to eat from one individual to another through observation or social interaction, rather than through personal experience alone. In this behavioral process, an observer encounters social cues such as another individual's food odors, actions, or apparent acceptance of a food, which can increase its later selection and consumption. Studying these preferences helps researchers examine learning, communication, group behavior, and the interaction between experience and social information. The topic is relevant to animal behavior, ecology, neuroscience, and research on how dietary patterns develop within populations.

2018

This paper presents a protocol for the investigation of social transmission of food preference in mice. The advantages and possible applications for this procedure, for instance, in detecting early changes in AD mouse models, are highlighted. To conclude, interpretation of the results in light of critical details are discussed.

This paper describes a novel method for oral infection of mice using Listeria monocytogenes-contaminated food. The protocol can readily be adapted for use with other food borne bacterial pathogens.

The CApillary FEeder (CAFE) Assay: A Method to Track Food Consumption and Preference in Drosophila

2023

This video describes the CApillary FEeder, or CAFE, assay, a behavioral method that measures food intake and preference of unrestrained fruit flies. The featured protocol shows how to perform the assay with minimal evaporation from the liquid-filled capillaries used to deliver the food and track its intake.

Described here is a novel automated experimental system that offers an alternative to the three-chamber test and also solves several caveats. This system supplies multiple behavioral parameters that enable rigorous analysis of small rodent behavioral dynamics during the social preference and social novelty preference tests.
