Heritability Analysis

Heritability analysis is a statistical approach that estimates how much variation in a measurable trait within a population is associated with genetic differences, making it useful for studying the origins of behavioral variation. Researchers compare patterns of resemblance among relatives, twins, adoptees, or genetically informed samples and partition observed variation into genetic and environmental components. In behavioral science, these estimates can clarify the relative contributions of genes, shared environments, and individual experiences to traits such as cognitive performance, temperament, or mental health symptoms. Heritability does not measure genetic determination in an individual, but it can guide research on development, gene–environment interplay, and population differences.

Heritability

Heritability is a statistical concept that measures the degree to which genetic differences among individuals contribute to trait variations within a population. It is a fundamental idea in genetics, often prone to misinterpretation. Heritability is expressed as a percentage, reflecting the proportion of variation in a specific trait across a population that can be linked to genetic differences. However, it's important to understand that heritability does not determine how "genetic" a trait is,...

Growing some flax varieties under nutrient stress results in genomic variation within a subset of the genome and phenotypic variation. A complex insertion at a specific site is associated with growth under various nutrient regimes and with changes in gene expression around this site.

An Overview of Genetic Analysis

2023

An organism’s physical traits, or phenotype, are a product of its genotype, which is the combination of alleles (gene variants) inherited from its parents. To varying degrees, genes interact with each other and environmental factors to generate traits. The distribution of alleles and traits within a population is influenced by a number of factors, including natural selection, migration, and random genetic drift. In this video, JoVE introduces some of the foundational discoveries in genetics,...

Salmonella invades and replicates inside intestinal epithelial cells both in Salmonella-specific vacuoles and free in the cytosol (hyper-replication). A high-throughput fluorescence microscopy-based protocol is described here to quantify the intracellular phenotypes of Salmonella by two complementary image analyses through ImageJ, reaching single-cell resolution and scoring.
