Lipid Mobility

Lipid mobility is the movement of lipid molecules within biological membranes, a property that helps determine membrane fluidity, organization, and function. Lipids can rotate and diffuse laterally within a bilayer, while movement between the two leaflets, called flip-flop, is much less frequent and often requires enzymes such as flippases; temperature, fatty-acid unsaturation, and cholesterol influence these motions. In biochemistry, measuring lipid mobility helps explain membrane permeability, protein organization, vesicle formation, and cell signaling, while techniques such as fluorescence recovery after photobleaching can quantify diffusion in model or cellular membranes. Understanding this behavior supports research on membrane dynamics and membrane-associated disease mechanisms.

Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assay (EMSA)

2023

The electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) is a biochemical procedure used to elucidate binding between proteins and nucleic acids. In this assay a radiolabeled nucleic acid and test protein are mixed. Binding is determined via gel electrophoresis which separates components based on mass, charge, and conformation. This video shows the concepts of EMSA and a general procedure, including gel and protein preparation, binding, electrophoresis, and detection. Applications covered in this video...

Mobile Marketing

2024

As consumers increasingly rely on smartphones and other mobile devices for browsing, communication, and shopping, mobile marketing has become essential in today's digital world. Brands must adjust their strategies to engage users where they spend most of their time, which is on mobile screens. Understanding mobile user behavior is crucial for successful mobile marketing. Mobile users typically interact with their devices briefly and frequently throughout the day. They prefer content that is...

Structure of Lipids

2020

Lipids include a diverse group of compounds that are largely nonpolar in nature. This is because they are hydrocarbons that include mostly nonpolar carbon-carbon or carbon-hydrogen bonds. Non-polar molecules are hydrophobic (“water fearing”), or insoluble in water. Lipids perform many different functions in a cell. Cells store energy for long-term use in the form of fats. Lipids also provide insulation from the environment for plants and animals. For example, they help keep aquatic birds and...

Using a Cyclic Ion Mobility Spectrometer for Tandem Ion Mobility Experiments

2022

Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is an interesting complement to mass spectrometry for the characterization of biomolecules, notably because it is sensitive to isomerism. This protocol describes a tandem IMS (IMS/IMS) experiment, which allows the isolation of a molecule and the generation of the mobility profiles of its fragments.
