Co-culture Assembly

Co-culture assembly is the controlled organization of two or more distinct cell types within a shared engineered environment to model or build multicellular systems. It typically combines cells in defined proportions and spatial arrangements, often using scaffolds, hydrogels, or microfluidic platforms that support cell-cell communication, adhesion, and exchange of soluble signals. In bioengineering, these systems help reproduce interactions that are absent from single-cell cultures, enabling studies of tissue development, disease mechanisms, and therapeutic responses. Co-culture assembly also supports the design of tissue models and regenerative constructs with greater biological complexity and functional relevance.

Protein Complex Assembly

2020

Proteins can form homomeric complexes with another unit of the same protein or heteromeric complexes with different types. Most protein complexes self-assemble spontaneously via ordered pathways, while some proteins need assembly factors that guide their proper assembly. Despite the crowded intracellular environment, proteins usually interact with their correct partners and form functional complexes. Many viruses self-assemble into a fully functional unit using the infected host cell to...
