Fibronectin Assembly

Fibronectin assembly is the cell-directed organization of fibronectin into fibrillar extracellular matrix networks that support cell adhesion, migration, and tissue structure. Cells bind fibronectin through integrins and generate contractile forces through the actin cytoskeleton, stretching fibronectin molecules to expose binding sites that promote intermolecular interactions and fibril formation. In bioengineering, controlling this process helps researchers design biomaterials with defined adhesive and mechanical properties, regulate cell behavior, and study extracellular matrix remodeling. Understanding fibronectin assembly also supports the development of engineered tissues and therapeutic strategies that depend on coordinated cell-matrix interactions.

Fibronectins Connect Cells with ECM

2023

Fibronectin is an adhesive glycoprotein present in the extracellular matrix of embryogenic and adult tissue. These molecules primarily aid in regulating cell motility and attachment. A fibronectin molecule is composed of two identical polypeptide chains attached to each other by a pair of disulfide bonds at the C-terminal. Both proteoglycans and collagen are attached to fibronectin proteins, which, in turn, are attached to integrin proteins. These integrin proteins interact with transmembrane...

A method to obtain nanofibers and complex nanostructures from single or multiple extracellular matrix proteins is described. This method uses protein-surface interactions to create free-standing protein-based materials with tunable composition and architecture for use in a variety of tissue engineering and biotechnology applications.

Protein Complex Assembly

2020

Proteins can form homomeric complexes with another unit of the same protein or heteromeric complexes with different types. Most protein complexes self-assemble spontaneously via ordered pathways, while some proteins need assembly factors that guide their proper assembly. Despite the crowded intracellular environment, proteins usually interact with their correct partners and form functional complexes. Many viruses self-assemble into a fully functional unit using the infected host cell to...
