Food Waste Valorization

Food waste valorization is the conversion of discarded or underused food materials into products, resources, or energy, transforming an environmental burden into a feedstock for a circular bioeconomy. In bioengineering, processes such as enzymatic treatment, microbial fermentation, anaerobic digestion, and extraction break down complex carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids or recover valuable compounds under controlled conditions. These approaches can produce biofuels, organic acids, enzymes, biomaterials, and other bioproducts while reducing waste sent to landfills and limiting resource loss. Their performance depends on feedstock composition, pretreatment, process conditions, and product recovery, making valorization an important platform for sustainable manufacturing and waste-management innovation.

2023

Robert M. Rioux and Taslima A. Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, Pennsylvania, PA Users are responsible for the proper disposal of the waste generated during their work. Improper waste disposal may severely endanger public health and/or the environment. The handling of hazardous waste must be regulated from the moment of generation until its disposal at its offsite final destination facility. A waste management system must be devised before work begins on any laboratory activity. Users...

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Genetic modification of foods has been a controversial issue due to debated concerns over health and environmental safety. This experiment demonstrates technical understanding of how food DNA is genetically identified, allowing for educated decision making about the safety and potential dangers of using genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food supplies. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is used to amplify food DNA...
