Laser Parameters

Laser parameters are the measurable settings that control how laser light is delivered, including wavelength, power, pulse duration, repetition rate, and spot size; they determine a beam’s energy, intensity, and interaction with matter. In bioengineering, changing these parameters alters photon absorption, scattering, heating, and photochemical effects in biological tissues or engineered materials, so exposure conditions must be matched to the target and desired response. Careful parameter selection supports applications such as laser-based fabrication, tissue processing, microscopy, and therapeutic light treatments, while helping researchers balance precision, treatment effectiveness, thermal damage, and experimental reproducibility.

2013

LIBS detection capabilities on soil simulants were tested using a range of pulse energies and timing parameters. Calibration curves were used to determine detection limits and sensitivities for different parameters. Generally, the results showed that there was not a significant reduction in detection capabilities using lower pulse energies and non-gated detection.

Automation of Mode Locking in a Nonlinear Polarization Rotation Fiber Laser through Output Polarization Measurements

2016

A protocol to detect and automate mode locking in a pre-adjusted nonlinear polarization rotation fiber laser is presented. The detection of a sudden change in the output polarization state when mode locking occurs is used to command the alignment of an intra-cavity polarization controller in order to find mode-locking conditions.

Wave Parameters

The simplest mechanical waves are associated with simple harmonic motion and repeat themselves for several cycles. These simple harmonic waves can be modeled using a combination of sine and cosine functions. Consider a simplified surface water wave that moves across the water's surface. Unlike complex ocean waves, in surface water waves, water moves vertically, oscillating up and down, whereas the disturbance of the wave moves horizontally through the medium. If a seagull is floating on the...
