Methane Yield

Methane yield is the amount of methane produced from a defined quantity of organic material, making it a key measure of anaerobic digestion performance and renewable energy potential. In bioengineering systems, microbial communities convert complex biomass through hydrolysis, acidogenesis, and acetogenesis before methanogenic archaea transform intermediate compounds into methane under oxygen-free conditions. Measuring methane yield helps researchers compare feedstocks, assess biodegradability, and optimize operating conditions for biogas production. It also supports the design and evaluation of waste-treatment systems, bioenergy processes, and strategies for recovering energy from agricultural, municipal, and industrial organic residues.

ATP Yield

Cellular respiration produces 30 - 32 ATP per glucose molecule. Although most of the ATP results from oxidative phosphorylation and the electron transport chain (ETC), 4 ATP are gained beforehand (2 from glycolysis and 2 from the citric acid cycle). The ETC is embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane and is comprised of four main protein complexes and an ATP synthase. NADH and FADH2 pass electrons to these complexes, which pump protons into the intermembrane space. This distribution of...

Stoichiometry, Product Yield, and Limiting Reactants - Concepts

Chemical equations represent how a chemical reaction proceeds from reactants to products through physical or chemical change using chemical formulas. Stoichiometry is a term that describes the relative quantities of reactants and products in a chemical reaction. It is based on the Law of Conservation of Mass, which is a fundamental law that states that matter is neither created nor destroyed. Quite simply, the number and identity of reactant atoms must equal the number and identity of product...

The theoretical yield of a reaction is the amount of product estimated to form based on the stoichiometry of the balanced chemical equation. The theoretical yield assumes the complete conversion of the limiting reactant into the desired product. The amount of product that is obtained by performing the reaction is called the actual yield, and it may be less than or (very rarely) equal to the theoretical yield. Percent Yield In the case of chemical reactions, the actual yield of the product is...

Accuracy and precision of the techniques used to measure methane emissions from ruminant animals are critically important for the success of greenhouse gas mitigation efforts. This manuscript describes the principles and operation of an automated system to monitor methane and carbon dioxide mass fluxes from the breath of ruminant animals.
