Ultrasound Sequence Programming

Ultrasound sequence programming is the design of timed acoustic pulse patterns that control how an ultrasound system transmits, receives, and processes sound, making it important for tailoring measurements and interventions. It works by coordinating parameters such as pulse timing, frequency, amplitude, beam direction, and echo acquisition so that returning signals provide useful information or deliver energy to a selected region. In bioengineering, programmed sequences support diagnostic imaging, tissue characterization, motion tracking, and ultrasound-mediated stimulation or therapy. Careful sequence design can improve spatial and temporal resolution, manage acoustic exposure, and adapt ultrasound systems to specific biological tissues and experimental goals.

We describe a new ultrasound-based vector tissue Doppler imaging technique to measure muscle contraction velocity, strain and strain rate with sub-millisecond temporal resolution during dynamic activities. This approach provides complementary measurements of dynamic muscle function and could lead to a better understanding of mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal disorders.

Programmed electrical stimulation provides the ability to determine conduction properties of the heart, and the possibility to induce and terminate cardiac arrhythmias using various pacing protocols. Using a transvenous catheter, intracardiac electrogram recordings can be obtained in mice following programmed electrical stimulation protocols to identify arrhythmogenic substrates.
