Drug Efficacy Testing

Drug efficacy testing is the systematic evaluation of whether a drug produces its intended biological effect at a defined dose and under specified conditions. In biological techniques, researchers compare treated and control cells, tissues, organisms, or disease models, measuring outcomes such as viability, pathogen burden, biomarker levels, or functional changes across a dose-response range. These studies help distinguish effective concentrations from ineffective or toxic exposures and provide evidence for selecting drug candidates, optimizing experimental protocols, and advancing compounds toward clinical evaluation. Careful controls, reproducible assays, and statistically sound analysis are essential for interpreting efficacy and comparing results across models.

This video demonstrates the method to perform a plaque assay using a virus obtained from infected porcine cornea. The porcine cornea is used to test the antiviral efficacy of experimental drugs.

An Assay to Evaluate Drug Efficacy against a Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection Model

2025

This video demonstrates an assay to evaluate the efficacy of drugs against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection. An in vitro infection model containing Mtb/macrophage aggregates is generated that mimics in vivo infection. Upon introducing suitable antibiotics, their efficacy is tested via resuzarin assay to monitor the survival of bacteria with increasing drug concentrations.

A High-throughput Compatible Assay to Evaluate Drug Efficacy against Macrophage Passaged Mycobacterium tuberculosis

New models and assays that would improve the early drug development process for next-generation anti-tuberculosis drugs are highly desirable. Here, we describe a quick, inexpensive, and BSL-2 compatible assay to evaluate drug efficacy against Mycobacterium tuberculosis that can be easily adapted for high-throughput screening.
