Abdominal Cavity

The abdominal cavity is the largest body cavity below the diaphragm, housing and protecting organs involved in digestion, metabolism, fluid regulation, and excretion. Its walls and the surrounding peritoneum support organs while allowing limited movement, and changes in abdominal muscle tension and pressure help coordinate actions such as breathing, coughing, defecation, and childbirth. Studying the abdominal cavity helps biologists understand organ arrangement, tissue relationships, circulation, and physiological function. This knowledge supports anatomy education, interpretation of imaging and dissection findings, and research into disorders affecting the gastrointestinal, urinary, reproductive, and endocrine systems.

Source: Alexander Goldfarb, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, MA Medical percussion is based on the difference in pitch between the sounds elicited by tapping on the body wall. The auditory response to tapping depends on the ease with which the body wall vibrates, and is influenced by underlying organs, strength of the stroke, and the state of the body wall. There are three main medical percussion sounds: resonance (heard over lungs), tympany (heard over...
