Appendix

The appendix is a narrow, finger-shaped pouch attached to the first part of the large intestine, where it contributes to gut-associated lymphoid tissue and intestinal immune function. Its wall contains lymphoid follicles that support immune surveillance, while its connection to the cecum allows interactions with intestinal contents and resident microorganisms. In biology and medicine, the appendix provides a model for studying mucosal immunity, inflammation, and host-microbe relationships. Blockage can trigger appendicitis, making its anatomy and vascular supply important for diagnosis, imaging, and surgical removal.

2013

Plants glands are specialized structures responsible for the biosynthesis and secretion of many compounds involved in interactions with the biotic environment. To enable studies on their molecular and biochemical features, a mechanical micropreparation technique was established in order to isolate single metabolically active glands, here from the carnivorous plant Nepenthes.

Protocols for Analyzing the Role of Paneth Cells in Regenerating the Murine Intestine using Conditional Cre-lox Mouse Models

2015

Intestinal epithelial stem cells (ISCs) are intermingled with Paneth cells. These cells are differentiated progeny of the ISC, which support the ISCs and provide antibacterial protection. Here we demonstrate how we used transgenic conditional mouse models to establish that Paneth cells play a crucial role in maintaining the intestinal epithelia.

Oscillation and Reaction Board Techniques for Estimating Inertial Properties of a Below-knee Prosthesis

Body segmental inertial properties are required for inverse dynamics modeling. Using an oscillation and reaction board technique, inertial properties of below-knee prostheses were measured. Using direct measures of prosthesis inertia in the inverse dynamics model of the prosthetic leg resulted in lower magnitudes of resultant joint forces and moments.
