Anal Canal

The anal canal is the terminal segment of the gastrointestinal tract, linking the rectum to the external opening and regulating the controlled passage of fecal material. Its function depends on coordinated activity between the internal anal sphincter, composed of smooth muscle and controlled involuntarily, and the external anal sphincter, composed of skeletal muscle and controlled voluntarily; sensory changes near the dentate line also contribute to continence and defecation. In biology and medicine, studying the anal canal clarifies gastrointestinal anatomy, neural and muscular control, and conditions such as incontinence, hemorrhoids, and anorectal disease.

Psychosexual Stages of Personality: Anal

2025

Sigmund Freud's theory of psychosexual development describes the anal stage as occurring between 18 months and three years of age. During this period, children derive pleasure from controlling and releasing their bowel movements. However, they quickly learn that societal expectations impose restrictions on when and where this can happen. This stage marks a critical point where children begin to develop a sense of control and mastery over their bodily functions, as well as their broader...

In this study, we describe the posterior semicircular canal approach as a reliable method for inner ear gene delivery in neonatal mice. We show that gene delivery through the posterior semicircular canal is able to perfuse the entire inner ear.

The C. elegans Excretory Canal as a Model for Intracellular Lumen Morphogenesis and In Vivo Polarized Membrane Biogenesis in a Single Cell: labeling by GFP-fusions, RNAi Interaction Screen and Imaging

The C. elegans excretory canal is a unique single-cell model for the visual in vivo analysis of de novo polarized membrane biogenesis. This protocol describes a combination of standard genetic/RNAi and imaging approaches, adaptable for the identification and characterization of molecules directing unicellular tubulogenesis, and apical membrane and lumen biogenesis.
