Association Fibers

Association fibers are bundles of white-matter axons that connect regions of the cerebral cortex within the same hemisphere, enabling communication across nearby and distant cortical areas. Their myelinated axons form short U-shaped fibers linking adjacent gyri and long association pathways, such as the superior longitudinal fasciculus, linking widely separated regions. By coordinating activity between specialized cortical areas, association fibers support functions including language, memory, attention, sensory integration, and voluntary behavior. Studying their organization helps researchers understand brain connectivity and how damage to specific pathways can disrupt cognition and contribute to neurological disorders.

Source: Julian Wills & Jay Van Bavel—New York University One of the core constructs in social psychology is the notion of an attitude toward an object or person. Traditionally, psychologists measured attitudes by simply asking people to self-report their beliefs, opinions, or feelings. This approach has limitations, however, when measuring socially sensitive attitudes, like racial prejudice, because people are often motivated to self-report unprejudiced, egalitarian beliefs (despite...

In Vivo Single-Fiber Recording of Sciatic Nerve C-Fibers in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates a single-fiber recording of C-fiber nerve conduction in rats. An anesthetized rat is incised to expose the sciatic nerve, which provides sensory and motor supply to the lower limbs. The individual C-fibers are then exposed. Electrical stimulation is provided using stimulus electrodes implanted in the foot, and a response is recorded from a single nerve fiber.

Classification of Skeletal Muscle Fibers

2019

Skeletal muscles continuously produce ATP to provide the energy that enables muscle contractions. Skeletal muscle fibers can be categorized into three types based on differences in their contraction speed and how they produce ATP, as well as physical differences related to these factors. Most human muscles contain all three muscle fiber types, albeit in varying proportions. Slow-Twitch Muscle Fibers Slow oxidative, muscle fibers appear red due to large numbers of capillaries and high levels of...
