Av Groove Implantation

AV groove implantation is a microsurgical method that places cells, tissue, biomaterials, or experimental devices within the atrioventricular groove, the anatomical boundary between the atria and ventricles. The procedure uses precise localization and controlled insertion to position the implant near cardiac tissues while limiting disruption of surrounding myocardium, valves, and coronary vessels. In biology, this approach supports studies of heart development, electrical conduction, tissue interactions, and cardiac regeneration. By delivering material to a defined anatomical site, AV groove implantation can help researchers assess local signaling, cell integration, structural remodeling, and functional recovery, providing a useful platform for investigating cardiac anatomy and therapeutic strategies.

We describe a microsurgical approach for the generation of an arteriovenous (AV) loop as a model for analyzing vascularization in vivo in an isolated and well-characterized environment. This model is not only useful for the investigation of angiogenesis, but is also optimally suited for engineering axially vascularized and transplantable tissues.
