Biliary Tree Separation

Biliary tree separation is the isolation of the branching network of bile ducts from surrounding liver tissue, enabling focused study of biliary anatomy and function. The process distinguishes bile-conducting structures from hepatocytes, blood vessels, and connective tissue through careful anatomical dissection or tissue-processing methods that preserve the ducts and their connections. In biology, this separation supports examination of bile transport, duct development, and interactions between cholangiocytes and the hepatic environment. It can also aid research on congenital abnormalities, obstructive diseases, tissue organization, and regenerative responses by allowing researchers to analyze the biliary system independently from the broader liver architecture.

Sea lamprey lose the gall bladder and bile ducts during metamorphosis, a process similar to human biliary atresia. A new fixation and clarification method (CLARITY) was modified to visualize the entire biliary tree using laser scanning confocal microscopy. This method provides a powerful tool to study biliary degeneration.

Tree Identification: How To Use a Dichotomous Key

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University A dichotomous key is a tool that identifies items in nature, such as leaves. This method is based on the idea of choosing between two characteristics. The word dichotomous comes from two Greek words that mean “to divide into two parts.” In a dichotomous key for leaf identification, each pair of phrases describes different features of the leaf. Only one of the phrases correctly applies to the leaf being keyed out. The...
