Biofuels Research

Biofuels research investigates renewable fuels produced from biological materials, including plants, algae, agricultural residues, and microorganisms, as alternatives to fossil fuels. It examines how biological processes convert biomass into usable energy carriers: fermentation can transform sugars into ethanol, while anaerobic digestion uses microbial communities to produce biogas, and chemical processing can convert oils into biodiesel. In biology, this work links metabolism, microbial ecology, genetics, and biotechnology to improve fuel yield and resource efficiency. Applications include developing sustainable transportation fuels, using waste streams as feedstocks, and assessing environmental impacts, energy balance, and scalability for lower-carbon energy systems.

Biofuels: Producing Ethanol from Cellulosic Material

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In this experiment, cellulosic material (such as corn stalks, leaves, grasses, etc.) will be used as a feedstock for the production of ethanol. The cellulosic material is first pretreated (ground and heated), digested with enzymes, and then fermented with yeast. Ethanol production is monitored using an ethanol probe. The experiment can be extended to optimize ethanol production by varying the feedstock used,...

The microbial conversion of organic matter into biofuels holds potential as a renewable energy source. Among biofuel sources, microalgae are recognized as a highly efficient and adaptable feedstock for biodiesel production, owing to their rapid biomass accumulation, elevated lipid productivity, and capacity to proliferate in diverse aquatic systems, including freshwater, marine, and wastewater habitats. Unlike terrestrial crops, microalgae do not compete for land and can achieve significantly...

2016

In this study, a protocol was developed to produce good quality pellets using a flat die pellet mill at reduced specific energy consumption testing high-moisture corn stover and a starch based binder. The results indicated that adding a corn starch binder improved the pellet durability, reduced percent fines and decreased specific energy consumption.
