Microsurgery

Microsurgery is a specialized surgical technique that uses magnification and miniature instruments to manipulate small anatomical structures, often vessels, nerves, and delicate tissues. Surgeons work through an operating microscope or high-resolution loupe system, using fine sutures and precise hand movements to align tissue layers and restore continuity while limiting trauma. In biology and medicine, microsurgery supports tissue transplantation, reconstructive procedures, nerve repair, and experimental studies of organ function and regeneration. Its ability to connect structures that are invisible or difficult to handle with the unaided eye has expanded research on healing, vascularization, and tissue integration.

Here, we describe a pre-clinical animal model for studying the pathophysiology of ischemia-reperfusion injury in reconstructive microsurgery. This free skin flap model based on the superficial caudal epigastric vessels in the rat may also allow for the evaluation of different therapies and compounds to counteract ischemia-reperfusion injury-related damage.

After puncturing the aorta through the inferior vena cava (IVC) to create an aorto-caval fistula in the mouse, solution containing a drug is infused into the IVC via the same needle, followed by incubation. This method enables more robust drug delivery to the venous endothelium compared to the external route.

Harvesting an Inguinal Draining Lymph Node from a Murine Model

This video demonstrates the surgical isolation procedure of the inguinal draining lymph node from a mouse model. Incision of the abdominal region provides access to the inguinal lymph node, which is surgically harvested. The harvested translucent inguinal lymph node can be used for immunological studies.
