Bladder Mucosa

Bladder mucosa is the specialized inner lining of the urinary bladder that separates bladder tissues from stored urine and supports normal urinary function. Its surface is formed by urothelium, a stratified epithelium containing protective umbrella cells whose flexible apical membranes allow the lining to expand during filling while maintaining a tight permeability barrier. Beneath the urothelium, connective tissue and signaling cells contribute to sensation, repair, and communication with the bladder wall. Studying bladder mucosa helps explain urine storage, epithelial regeneration, urinary tract infections, inflammatory disorders, and urothelial cancers, making it important in biology, pathology, and the development of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

The established technique to inoculate primary invasive orthotopic bladder cancer xenografts requires laparotomy and mobilization of the bladder. This procedure inflicts significant morbidity on the mice, is technically challenging and time-consuming. We therefore developed a high-precision, percutaneous approach utilizing ultrasound guidance.

Approximately 3-8 million people in the United States suffer from interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), a debilitating condition characterized in part by pelvic pain. In order to study nervous system contributions to the condition, a physiological model of urinary bladder pain is used in mice and rats.
