Bone Growth Stimulation

Bone growth stimulation is the use of biological signals or therapeutic interventions to encourage new bone formation and repair, making it important for skeletal development, fracture healing, and tissue regeneration. It works by influencing bone cells: osteoblasts produce mineralized matrix, while osteoclasts remove existing tissue, allowing coordinated remodeling in response to mechanical or other signals. In biology and medicine, researchers study these processes to understand skeletal growth and improve treatments for delayed healing, bone loss, and injuries. Knowledge of cellular signaling and tissue mechanics also supports the development of regenerative strategies and devices that promote functional bone recovery.

Growth of Cartilage and Bone Tissue

Chondrocytes form a temporary cartilaginous model by dividing and secreting a thick gel-like extracellular matrix. Once the chondrocytes undergo programmed cell death, osteoblasts enter the site of the cartilaginous model. The process of replacing the temporary cartilaginous model with bone in an ordered manner is called endochondral ossification. In endochondral ossification, not all of the cartilage is replaced by bone tissue. Some cartilage that performs a protective and supportive function...

Here we present a surgical protocol in rabbits with the aim to assess bone substitution materials in terms of bone regeneration capacities. By using PEEK cylinders fixed onto rabbit skulls, osteoconduction, osteoinduction, osteogenesis and vasculogenesis induced by the materials may be evaluated either on live or euthanized animals.
