Carotid Sinus Nerve Dissection

Carotid sinus nerve dissection is a biological technique used to expose and isolate the nerve that carries sensory information from the carotid sinus and carotid body to the brain, enabling investigation of cardiovascular and respiratory regulation. During the procedure, surrounding tissues are carefully separated to identify this small branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve while preserving nearby vessels and nerves. The isolated nerve contains afferent fibers that detect arterial pressure and blood chemistry, transmitting signals to brainstem circuits that adjust heart rate, vascular tone, and breathing. This preparation supports studies of baroreflexes, chemoreflexes, autonomic physiology, and neural control of homeostasis.

Source: Richard Glickman-Simon, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, MA This video provides an overview of sinus, nose, and throat examinations. The demonstration begins with a brief overview of the anatomy of the region. The upper third of the nose is bony, and the bottom two-thirds are cartilaginous. Air entering the nares passes through the nasal vestibules and into the narrow passageway between the nasal septum...
