Cationic Polymers

Cationic polymers are macromolecules bearing positively charged functional groups, making them important materials for interacting with negatively charged biological molecules and cell surfaces. Their electrostatic attraction enables them to bind nucleic acids, proteins, and anionic membranes, while polymer structure, charge density, and environmental conditions influence particle formation, cellular uptake, and biological activity. In biology, cationic polymers support gene and drug delivery by condensing cargo into nanoscale complexes and promoting membrane association. They are also studied in antimicrobial coatings, biosensing, tissue engineering, and biomaterials research, where controlling charge can improve delivery efficiency, cellular interactions, and compatibility.

Enhancing Viral Transduction in Natural Killer Cells Using a Cationic Polymer

2025

This video demonstrates an assay for cationic polymer-mediated viral transduction in natural killer (NK) cells. The cells are incubated with transgenic lentivirus vectors encoding a fluorescent protein. The addition of a cationic polymer enables the virus to attach to the cells and integrate its RNA into the host genome, expressing the fluorescent protein. The fluorescence is quantified to assess the polymer-induced enhancement of transduction.

In this work, we prepared an adsorbent composed of the cationic N,N-dimethylamino propylacrylamide methyl chloride quaternary (DMAPAAQ) polymer gel and iron hydroxide for adsorbing arsenic from groundwater. The gel was prepared via a novel method designed to ensure the maximum content of iron particles in its structure.

The word polymer is derived from the Greek words “poly” which means “many” and “mer” which means “parts”. Polymers are long chains of molecules composed of repeating units of smaller molecules, known as monomers. They either occur naturally, such as DNA and proteins, or can be constructed synthetically, like plastics. They have varied structural characteristics, such as linear chains, branched chains, or complex networks, that contribute to the properties that they exhibit. Additionally,...

Lentiviral Mediated Delivery of shRNAs to hESCs and NPCs Using Low-cost Cationic Polymer Polyethylenimine (PEI)
