Constitutive Heterochromatin

Constitutive heterochromatin is a compact, transcriptionally repressed form of chromatin that remains largely condensed across cell types and cell-cycle stages, helping organize and protect repetitive regions of the genome. It commonly contains satellite DNA at centromeres and repetitive sequences near telomeres, with compaction maintained by DNA methylation, histone H3 lysine 9 methylation, and binding of heterochromatin protein 1. In biology, these regions support chromosome architecture, accurate centromere function, and genome stability by limiting recombination and inappropriate transcription. Studying constitutive heterochromatin therefore clarifies how epigenetic mechanisms regulate chromosome behavior and preserve genetic information during cell division.

The extent of chromatin compaction can be studied by staining chromatin using specific DNA binding dyes. Under the microscope, the dense-compacted regions that take up more dye are called heterochromatin. Heterochromatin is further classified into two forms – constitutive heterochromatin and facultative heterochromatin. Constitutive heterochromatin: It is a highly compact region of chromatin that is mostly concentrated in the centromere and telomere. Unlike euchromatin, the amino acid at 9th...

Constitutional Isomers of Alkanes

Organic compounds of the same molecular formula can have different structural formulas called constitutional isomers, and the phenomenon is known as constitutional isomerism. Alkanes with four or more carbons showing multiple structures with the same molecular formula thereby exhibit constitutional isomerism. The linear isomer of an alkane is prefixed by the term “n”; hence a linear isomer of pentane is known as n-pentane. Based on the type of branching, some of the branched isomers are given...

Constitutive and Regulated Gene Expression

Gene expression in prokaryotes is governed by constitutive and regulated systems, allowing cells to balance the production of essential proteins with adaptive responses to environmental changes.Constitutive Gene ExpressionConstitutive, or housekeeping, genes are continuously expressed as they encode proteins vital for fundamental cellular processes. These include enzymes for glycolysis, ribosomal components for protein synthesis, and proteins involved in DNA replication. Their constant...
